Announcement

The Center for Innovation in Social Work and Health (CISWH) at BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) is excited to welcome Dr. Marianne Nilsen as a visiting scholar for the 2025-2026 academic year. While at CISWH, she will focus on three research objectives: exploring collaborative models between social workers and healthcare professionals in gerontological social work, examining the integration of generative AI into social work education, and understanding how social innovation can be translated into a sustainable business model.

Dr. Nilsen comes to CISWH from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) where she serves as associate professor of social work.

Gerontological Social Work & Interdisciplinary Collaboration

This project will examine international approaches to collaboration between social workers and healthcare professionals to address gaps in person-centered elder care in Norway. Dr. Nilsen will conduct field observations and engage in knowledge exchange to understand everyday practices in elder care and gather insights on current research, policy, and practice in social work for older adults. Her research will culminate in a proposal for a cross-disciplinary project on gerontological social work with the Research Council of Norway (FRIPRO).

Ethical and Inclusive Integration of AI in Social Work Education

As AI tools become entrenched in academic and professional settings, it’s essential that social work students learn how to use these tools responsibly. Partnering with CISWH, Dr. Nilsen will develop a comprehensive educational framework to strengthen social work students’ awareness of the ethical challenges surrounding AI use and safeguard academic integrity.

Translating Social Innovation into a Sustainable Business Model

Collaborating with practitioners, educators, and other stakeholders, Dr. Nilsen will also develop a sustainable business model for hybrid therapeutic/practical services for adult children of older adults that puts social innovation at the forefront. The project will include a rigorous literature review to understand the current landscape of gerontological social work, including key concepts, trends, and opportunities for innovation. Through collaborative workshops and conversations, Dr. Nilsen will develop and test business models that have social impact, are inclusive and economically viable.

With a background in social and community psychology, Dr. Nilsen brings a unique perspective on identity, belonging, and quality of life to CISWH. Her past work focused on child development, mental health promotion, and existential meaning-making, with a particular emphasis on inclusive practices for vulnerable populations.
